Hospital Patient with Rare Disease Blesses Cancer Patients with Original Christian Song

A hospital can seem like a sterile and sometimes gloomy place, but one patient is lifting the mood at Duke Hospital with his own music.

Music has taken the place of food for Dustin Chapman, 21, of Whiteville, North Carolina, because he hasn't been able to eat or drink normally for years.

Chapman has a two rare diseases of the esophagus called Achalasia and Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction, where the esophagus muscles basically quit functioning. To cope, Chapman is using his talents as a singer, musician, and songwriter, to encourage himself and countless others who listen. A video shared on Facebook of Chapman singing and playing the piano at Duke inspired more than 5,500 shares and 434,000 views.

Three years ago, Chapman's condition required an 11-hour surgery on his esophagus. For 18 months, he could eat anything he wanted, but now Duke doctors are trying different things to enable him to be able to swallow food and liquids. He was recently referred to a specialist in New York who performed another major surgery on his esophagus.

"In 2017, all my problems started coming back," said Chapman.

While he and his family wait for answers, Chapman found his best therapy was at one of the few pianos in the hospital.

Chapman's performance at the Duke Cancer Center earlier this year got rave reviews.

"I had cancer patients coming up to me, and they were just crying, and they were like, 'That was probably therapeutic for you, but we needed that just as much as you did,'" said Chapman. "It was very rewarding."

Chapman is a music major student at Catawba College. He says he enjoys writing and performing his own gospel and country songs.

Elephant Just Wants To Play With His Human Friend

This elephant is ready to play and he’s going to make sure that everyone knows it. While his human friend stands on the other side of the fence painting, this funny animal tries to get his attention. It’s not everyday that you get up close and personal with one of God’s amazing creatures, like the elephant. These incredible animals may look big and scary sometimes, but most of them have a heart of gold. This big baby is the perfect example. He uses his trunk to tap the young man’s shoulder and even gets up on his 2 back legs to reach over the fence. With a distraction like this, I’m not sure how much painting actually got done but it’s definitely an adorable break. After all that effort to get the young man’s attention, I sure hope they got some time to play together. I think we can all agree that God truly took Him time when He created all of the breathtaking animals that have been placed on this Earth. They are definitely a gift that should be cherished and treasured. I cannot imagine what it’s like to come face to face with these incredible creatures but I bet it is a memory that man will never forget. This video is absolutely a sight to behold and it definitely brought a big smile to my face. I just love seeing these majestic animals act like little teddy bears. Don’t you think that all of God’s creatures are truly amazing?

Joy, Peace and Love this Christmas

I found Joy, Peace and Love, not just from the transformative, 6-week long trip abroad, but even after I returned and realized God had already blessed me with abundance of these things.

Share the Joy

Man Finds Out He Is Finally Getting New Lungs

This man just found out he was getting a set of new lungs and his reaction has the Internet on fire. Kevin D'Agostino was diagnosted with cystic fibrosis at birth and he has been on the transplant list for a long time. So, when his family found out that Kevin was finally getting his new lungs, they decided to capture Kevin’s reaction. It was 3 am when everyone waltzed into his room and woke up him to say his surgery would be later this morning. Kevin was obviously in shock and when the realization set in, he couldn’t hold back the emotion. “I thought I was really low on the list?" he exclaimed as he hugged his mom and dad. Just a few hours later, Kevin was taken to the hospital where he received the surgery that he had been waiting for. His brother, Michael, wrote an update on Instagram saying, “Thank you to Dr. Ali and his team at Loyola for their hard work during the 8 hour surgery. We saw Kevin early this morning and he looks great! They said the surgery well went, and we are excited for his recovery. We also want to keep in mind the donor’s family, we appreciate their gift and are thinking of them during their time of mourning.” Kevin has already been walking around the hospital and the family is so grateful for this amazing gift. What a moment to capture on video and be able to relive time and time again.

Rare Skin Condition Causes Newborn's Skin To Crack

A little girl born with a rare skin condition that caused her skin to crack is now thriving. Throughout pregnancy, Jennie Wilklow was told that she had a healthy baby girl. But during her c-section surgery, the doctor’s informed Jennie and her husband that their newborn had a birth defect. Jennie remembers her husband remarking on the situation, “He just said, ‘It’s bad, it’s just bad. But I looked into her eyes and she has the most beautiful soul.’” Little Anna Wilklow was born with a condition called harlequin ichthyosis. It is a genetic condition that doesn’t allow the last layers of skin to develop correctly. This causes the skin to harden and crack shortly after birth. “She was crying. She was in pain and her skin became hard like leather,” Jennie said. Anna spent over a month in an incubator to heal, but now the 15-month-old is a happy and healthy toddler. There are still some precautions that the family must take, such as being aware of extreme temperatures and long baths every single day. And as her skin rapidly reproduces, Anna’s appetite greatly increases. In fact, this sweet toddler consumes over 2,100 calories a day, more than the average adult. But overall, this precious little girl is thriving at home and with her 2 older brothers. Even though life may never be ‘normal’ for Anna, her family knows that she is absolutely perfect just the way she is. “She’s more than her disease,” Jennie said. What an inspiring little girl!

Long-Lost Cat Reunites With Family After Camp Fire

A long-lost cat was finally reunited with her family after she went missing during the devastating Camp Fire. Courtney Werblow's family home was destroyed when deadly fires ran through Northern California. When the flames started to approach the house, Courtney’s cat, Timber, fled. That’s when the family was also forced to evacuate without their beloved feline. After being gone for over a month, The Werblows feared that Timber was gone forever. It’s been weeks since the family has been to their home site, but today they are being escorted back to see if anything remains. As soon as they arrived, Courtney saw the most amazing sight in the distance. Timber was alive and well and running right towards her. Thankfully, this heartwarming reunion was all caught on camera and it’s truly touching to witness. Even though this family may have lost some of their earthly possessions, their sweetest companion was able to survive. That is truly something to rejoice about. We all love our animals and the special joy that they bring into our lives. There’s no doubt in my mind that God knew exactly what He was doing when He placed cats on this earth. Our pets give us companionship and unconditional love and I think that is exactly what The Werblow family needs right now. Courtney and her cat definitely share a very special bond and it warms my heart to see them together right now. Do you have fur babies at home that love and comfort you like this?

Young Crooner Sings Frank Sinatra's 'Fly Me To The Moon'

Eros Atomus Isler put his own spin on the Frank Sinatra classic ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ during The Voice Germany finals. This young man has been impressing the judges week after week on the singing competition as part of Team Michi and Smudo. When it came time for the finale, Isler decided to take a risk and belt out the lyrics of this beloved classic. ‘Fly me to the moon Let me play among the stars Let me see what spring is like on A-Jupiter and Mars In other words, hold my hand In other words, baby, kiss me’ Decades after his death, Frank Sinatra continues to be one of the most recognized jazz musician names in the world. The blue-eyed crooner grabbed hearts in America and later internationally through both a successful vocal career and fame in Hollywood. Over the years, many artists have covered the songs that Sinatra made famous. However, this beloved musician’s fan base is very loyal, so singing a Sinatra song is always a risky choice for a performer. After seeing Eros’ performance, I think it’s safe to say that he did this classic justice. It’s never easy to emulate such an iconic artist, but this young man gave it all he had and the response was overwhelming. Even if he doesn’t win, Eros Atomus Isler has put his heart and soul into this competition and I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. Who else was impressed by this young crooner’s Frank Sinatra cover?
